How I work...
Since each student's learning challenge is unique, it is important that my approach is tailored to the student's problem area. An initial meeting with the parent is used to discover the parent’s perspective. I then contact the student’s teacher before working out a tailored approach.
After each 3-4 sessions, I consult with the parent for feedback on progress, what is working, what isn't working, on my performance, observations I have made, and suggestions to the parent on how he/she can contribute. After 6-8 sessions, I will contact the teacher for the same feedback. Adjustments are made accordingly.
In each session, I usually assign some homework to both the student and the parent, since a parent can usually contribute a lot more on a daily basis. My objective is to work myself out of a job and come away with the satisfaction of seeing a student become successful again.
Policies...
- Before the first session, a written contract is agreed to and signed in order to eliminate confusion or misunderstandings later.
- I typically tutor at the student's home or a neutral place (library, school, etc.)
- A parent or guardian must be present nearby whenever I am with a student.
- I have a competitive target hourly fee, but am sensitive to a parent's ability to pay.
